Andrew had me going through my set, firstly making sure my mic positioning was correct. As I’m suffering from a bit of back trouble (the benefits of getting on a bit….!) I’ve had to modify my footing, so I needed a bit of instruction before this came right.

I don’t know why, but I’m having a touch of block somewhere during the opening song. I don’t know if this is just nerves, or lack of concentration or something, but it’s always somewhere during Chasing it Down that I am forgetting a word or a phrase somewhere, and it’s not that I don’t know the song, far from it… Anyway, second time around it came out good.

Then we started to work out Andrew’s parts fully. Watching the Rain is sounding very nice, and Chasing it Down is coming together too. Anyway, a little work is still needed on (Don’t Hurry) Slow Down, but the other two are coming together nicely. As I know Andrew’s style is a little different to mine, I’m asking him to fill in a second part where it feels comfortable. I’ve also given him some recordings of the live songs that I did over last weekend, these were just miked-up practices, so he gets an idea of what I’m going to play and can get familiar with them.

Last practice run through in two weeks time, and then we’re performing it…

I’m now into session 3 of performance coaching. Andrew has been giving me tips on how to make my songs more dynamic on stage, and today he introduced mic technique as well. I have been practicing at home over the last week or so with an unplugged mic on stand, to learn to be comfortable with it there, but Andrew has even covered where to put your feet, and how to move to and from the mic during the performance.

I was sure once I saw the mics at The Hop, that they were Shure SM58’s, and today confirmed it. They are, after all, the world’s most “bomb proof” microphone for quality sound and robustness combined, and often the stage mic of preference. Today one of them was used for me to get positioning and posture right.

I currently have a set-list of three songs, namely: Chasing it Down, Watching the Rain and (Don’t Hurry) Slow Down, and I have been busy practicing these for the last three weeks. We’ve discussed me doing some cover songs, but I’m really not so keen, as I have so many of my own songs to choose from. I did play a couple of possible covers to Andrew three weeks back in session 1, so they can remain as reserves for now, while I concentrate on perfecting the current set. This set is to build upon over time, so we can choose to include the later if need be.

Along with this, I have just been given access to The Songwriting School course for recording. This, I hope, will smooth some of the gaps in my knowledge on recording technique, and help me mix my home studio tracks better, as I really want to be able to record and present my tracks, songs and instrumentals alike, in as professional a quality as possible. Looking at the syllabus, some of the topics covered are already familiar to me, but my hope is that the depth of material covered will be greater than my present knowledge. The next few weeks will decide, I guess.

Held at Andrew’s house on Tuesday, we went through a few songs that I felt I could work on in order to play live and rebuild my stage confidence. I played a few verses of my songs tha I’d like to perform live, as well as a couple of covers, to get ‘established’ so to speak. We discussed my last disastrous gig, and then hopefully this can be put to bed, where I hope the old anxieties won’t resurface.

Andrew is offering to accompany me for these open mic events, for as long as I need it. I must say this is encouraging. I am seeing the supportive side of 360AD now, and I’m looking forward to our future sessions.

On returning home, I have put together some song sheets with chords for Andrew to learn for our next session in two week’s time.
